I can't say that I like this song per se. However, I was in high school when this song came out and we had to spend HOURS listening to the radio so we could hurry up and tape record it when the DJs on 92.5 finally got around to playing it. Yes, I said tape record; this was 1983 after all. We needed the tape recording so we could have our very own Grandma listen to this song. We (I) felt it was just so funny that she would enjoy sharing in the hilarity too. Eventually, I must have convinced our Mom to purchase the record (yes, record!) and on Christmas Eve, when Grandma and Grandpa came down to our house, I played it for Grandma and waited expectantly for her verdict.
Grandma laughed through the whole song and when it was over she said, "Teresy, I love you! Do you know why? Because you are the only one of my grandkids who would share something like this with me." At the time I took that to mean she thought the song was funny too. Now that I'm about 30 years past the experience, I'm not as confident as I was back then.
The fact that we convinced Mom to buy that stupid record is funny to me too. After all, there are references to beer in it and that was certainly not anything Mom and Dad would have ever condoned. I probably failed to tell them about that particular part in the song. It's also possible we didn't know about that part. Back in the 80's, if there were references to things that might corrupt the minds of the youth, those types of lyrics were cut out during daytime play on the radio. One had to stay up past midnight to hear the lyrics that were deemed unacceptable.
For your viewing pleasure, I present Elmo and Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer". This has got to be one of the dumbest videos ever filmed! I'm sort of embarrassed to put this on here, but not enough to actually follow through on not doing it. Perhaps you would prefer to shut down your computer now and do something useful.
