Do you know anyone who works retail? "Heard this same song twenty times and it's only Halloween!" or "Ransack the mall, shop until you lose your mind." How about the person you know who doesn't realize their light up Christmas tree sweater is kinda tacky? "Run to your closet, find your Christmas sweater, screaming carols all the way, FALALALA!" The last part also reminds me of the kid who appears in every Christmas play around the country. This is the kid who is somehow always positioned in front of the microphone, doesn't realize he/she is both tone deaf and a monotone and zealously screams the lyrics to whatever carol they happen to be, um, singing at the time. Come on, you all know the kid I'm talking about.
Last year, I posted Straight No Chaser's The Christmas Can-Can on Facebook. This prompted my sister to ask, "Why doesn't Mom's group sing like this?" Our Mom is a famous trombonist and she plays in many different bands and in many different genres and the fact that she is an instrumentalist and not a singer didn't stop us from having fun anyway. Here are the lyrics I made up.
'Cuz they're to old to do the Can-Can
if they do they'll fall and break their hips
and then they can't play Christmas mus....ic
on their brass instruments while doing high kicks
and trying to play middle C.
My sister said, "But it would be a sight to see." and so I responded:
Yes it would be quite hil.ar.i.ous
to see your Mother Can-Can
while we laugh hysterically at her
and watch her trip over her spit valve while Can-Canning
and trying to play trombone at the same time.
In other words, they can't Can-Can.
Anyway, enjoy Straight No Chaser's version of The Christmas Can-Can
(And it just occurred to me that my Mom might subscribe to my blog and now has all the proof in the world that we do in fact make fun at her expense from time to time! Good thing she's a good sport! Also if you are counting, Mom might not be famous, but she is a darn good trombonist!)
